The muses collide when Maldon Meehan presents "Brightening Glance," a cross-cultural dance show about the cycling of the seasons, inspired by the work of the iconic Irish poet William Butler Yeats, as well as songs and poetry from a host of other world traditions.  Produced by Irish dancer and choreographer Maldon Meehan, the show will feature Irish traditional sean-nós (or “old style”) dance, as well as American clogging, Cape-Breton step dance, 1930s era tap dance, ballet and Bellydance.  The performance will be set to the live music of the dynamic Portland-based Celtic & international roots quartet Stringed Migration.

Maldon Meehan is a performer, teacher and choreographer of percussive dance. She has performed at festivals and camps in American and Ireland. Joining Maldon Meehan and her troupe will be guest dancers Brian Hart, Leela Grace, Shannon Dunne and Eva Bellydancer.

Percussive dance lovers may remember the stellar performance of The Maldon Meehan Dancers at last year's Portland Christmas Revels, or last fall’s An Damhsa show, which chronicled stories of Irish immigration. Principal dancers will be joined on stage by troupe members Meredith English, Maura Mahon, Delores Day, Elizabeth Stevens and Cathy Jensen.

Stringed Migration will play selections from their critically acclaimed album Fly Not Yet, as well as new works created for the performance.  The band consists of Elizabeth Nicholson (also an alumnus of last year’s Christmas Revels) on Celtic harp, guitar, and vocals; Bob Soper on bouzouki, vocals, violin and percussion; Eddie Parente on violin and viola; and Rob Barrick on Scottish small-pipes and double bass.  Joining the band on a few selections will be 2002 All-Ireland Fleadh singing champion Brian Hart, and Portland’s own Americana songstress Leela Grace.

The Yeats Poetry Cycle was conceptualized and crafted by local Irish music and dance lover Nancy Jarrell.
